With entry ‘Global from Scratch’ Placemakers has won the competition for participating in the Wonderland Project Space in Cluj Napoca (RO). ‘Global from Scratch’ is collaboration between Ronald Boer and Jonmar van Vlijmen.

MAKING THE NEW CITY; GLOBAL FROM SCRATCH
The times of mass production are over.
We’re heading towards the end of capitalism.
Disconnecting deindustrialised area’s from their capitalist past, we give them a new life and start a new community, global from scratch, open source based, ever improving itself and has a diy approach. The new motto is: produce what you need and go down in scale.
Pioneers are the first settlers to use these vacant industrial sites. The architect creates conditions where he uses the expertise of the new pioneer. Reclaiming these abundant areas, creates space for a new time where everyone can make, create and give shape to their own lives. Using each others expertise, we become the pioneers of these new communities, like industrial ecologies.
The architect could use its expertise to be director in the process of shaping the new city.
When peoples desire change in their own environment motivation grows stronger to migrate and become a pioneer. The first stage of the reactivation of these post industrial sites happens when the first inhabitants settle themselves. Creating a new dynamic energy in these places with small gestures.
Once several pioneers are rooted and can hold together a new structure we speak of a settlement. A self regulating and every improving system will grow and evolve towards a fully grown urban structure. This settlement can start building a new foundation where exchange of knowledge and skills take place on a small scale. This is the future currency.
Reflecting by debating and discussing old systems, innovation takes place. With the age of mass production being over, a new time has come where we produce to what we need. Becoming your own supplier of creating what you need is the new target. A complete change industry, with small scale producing, using open source technology to print out your life.
Since every corner of the world has been discovered, and being in times of transformation. The new city will develop from scratch, with global exchange.
‘Global from scratch’ shows the memories of a pioneer, inhabiting vacant industrial sites. This pioneer is no longer a pioneer but has evolved into a full grown mature complex system.
The new city encourages people to reactivate the postindustrial areas by combining a system in which Open Source technology and nature become one.
